Meet World-Renowned Author, Comic Strip Artist, Songwriter Guy Gilchrist

Meet Guy Gilchrist, a world-renowned illustrator, author, comic strip artist, and songwriter. Best known for being Jim Henson’s cartoonist, Guy will be participating in the NorthEast ComicCon & Collectibles Extravaganza: The Holiday Pop Culture Shopping and Entertainment Event of the Year, November 25-27, 2022. Guy will be signing autographs,  taking photos, offering custom works of art, and meeting with fans all weekend!

In addition to creating the “Muppets” comic strip (which was published globally in 660+ newspapers a day from 1981 to 1986), Guy Gilchrist was also instrumental in Henson’s “Fraggle Rock,” as well as in “The Muppet Babies.” His work was declared a National Treasure by First Lady Nancy Reagan in 1984, and there was a permanent enshrinement of his work in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. as part of a collection of his iconic Muppet artwork. The work of his cartoons has been immortalized in some of his most cherished, well-known cartoons, including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, Tiny Toons, Pink Panthers, and Minnie Mouse, among others.

In 1995, Gilchrist took control of the internationally syndicated, long-running comic strip “Nancy,” which was first introduced to the public in 1938 by the celebrated illustrator Ernie Bushmiller. In addition to returning the strip to its simple, yet impactful, illustration style introduced by Bushmiller, Gilchrist would also often use the panel’s background to suggest subtle, meaningful sub-themes. He often depicted characters in concert T-shirts or listening to music, demonstrating his love for music and his life in Music City; Aunt Fritzi was portrayed as a music critic, while occasionally artists were given personal mentions or cartoons. Three Rocks (the fictional home of Nancy) was tagged as a small suburb on the outskirts of Nashville by Gilchrist in 2013, cementing the strip’s relationship with Nashville forever. After 23 years of writing the daily Nancy cartoon, he retired in 2018 to devote more time to his other varied creative pursuits.

He has also written and illustrated 42 children’s books, including the acclaimed “Night Lights & Pillow Fights”, which has won several awards. In 1998 and 1999, he won both the Reuben Award from the National Cartoonists Society for Best Book Illustrator and three Children’s Choice Awards from the International Reading Council. In October 2020, Eva Lou’s “Monster Dance,” (written by Eva Lou, illustrated by Gilchrist, and published by Madeleine Editions), was released both as an animated, interactive Apple book and a physical book internationally. Children are taught how to tame the COVID-19 monster with proper hygiene and careful safety procedures. To prepare kids for life in a pandemic world, this is the first enhanced/interactive animated book for children ages 3-6.  Here is more information about this book: https://madeleineeditions.com/stories/monster-dance/
