What exactly is Mario Day? A day that honors the beloved central character of the Super Mario Bros franchise, Mario. In honor of this holiday, which falls on March 10th, let’s show our appreciation and love for the jumping plumber who has brought so much joy to gamers across the globe. Mario’s impact and legacy are undeniable, regardless of whether you’re a hardcore fan or just a casual player.
Mario Day dates back to the late 1970s and early 1980s when Nintendo was a struggling toy company trying to break into the arcade game market. Nintendo needed something new and original to break into the video game market at a time when the field was rapidly expanding. Shigeru Miyamoto, a Japanese artist, was tasked by Nintendo’s then-President Hiroshi Yamauchi with creating a video game. Donkey Kong, released in 1981, was the result.
The Donkey Kong game featured a character called Jump Man, whose name was later changed to Mario. An angry monkey threw barrels at the character while he climbed ladders and rafters trying to rescue a princess. It was destined to be a huge success because it was unique for its time. As the saying goes, the rest is history.
Several Donkey Kong sequels and other games featured Mario from then on. Mario’s Cement Factory (1983), Donkey Kong Jr. (1982), and Mario Bombs Away (1983) were among these titles. Then came the Mario craze, starting with a game. A game released in 1983 gave Mario a brother, the now infamous Luigi, and put him into a city’s plumbing system. Super Mario Bros. was released two years later, in 1985, and has been a top-selling video game ever since. One of the best Mario games of all time is considered to be Super Mario Bros 3 released in 1988.
There has been a wide variety of Mario games released since 1988. In addition to Super Mario World (1990), Super Mario Kart (1992), Super Mario 64 (1995), Super Mario Bros. (2000), Super Smash Bros (2000), Mario Sports Superstars (2017), Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (2017), and Super Mario Odyssey (2017). The list above is only partial. There are dozens of games featuring our jumping plumber. The choice should be easy for Mario Day.
