Striking a Chord Chris Poland's Journey through Heavy Metal and Jazz Fusion

Chris Poland‘s name echoes throughout the world of heavy metal and jazz fusion with a significant impact. Known as the co-founder of the heavy jazz/rock/fusion power trio OHM, Poland’s career spans multiple decades, showcasing his versatility, creativity, and enduring commitment to his craft.

Born in Dunkirk, New York, Poland was fascinated with music from a young age. His passion led him to pick up the guitar during his high school years, and he quickly proved his mettle by replacing Richard “Max” Maxfield in the rock/jazz group Welkin. In 1977, Poland ventured west, moving to Los Angeles where he formed The New Yorkers with Robertino ‘Pag’ Pagliari and siblings Gar and Stu Samuelson.

In the early 1980s, Poland and Gar Samuelson were approached by the pioneering thrash metal band Megadeth. Their participation was pivotal, helping to shape the band’s signature sound. During his tenure with Megadeth, Poland contributed his exceptional guitar skills to their debut album, “Killing Is My Business… and Business Is Good!” and its successor, “Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying?” His playing on these albums helped cement Megadeth’s reputation as a force to be reckoned with in the thrash metal scene.

However, after the release of Megadeth’s second album, Poland decided to part ways with the band, venturing out to explore new artistic territories. He briefly assumed the role of a bass player for the Circle Jerks, showcasing his versatility in a completely different musical genre. He continued to delve into various music forms, releasing two solo albums – “Return to Metalopolis” and “Chasing the Sun,” followed by “Rare Trax,” a companion album.

Chris Poland’s next significant move came when he was invited to be the founding lead guitarist for the band ‘Damn the Machine.’ With Poland on board, the band released an album and embarked on a world tour, further augmenting his reputation in the global music community.

In 1997, a long-lasting partnership was born when Poland and Pagliari reunited to form OHM, a heavy jazz/rock/fusion power trio. With Koko Bermejo initially on the drums, they have since worked with drumming legends such as Kofi Baker, David Eagle, and Nick Menza. The trio has consistently delivered electrifying performances, resonating with fans of jazz fusion and heavy rock alike.

In a testament to their drive for continuous evolution, Poland and Pagliari formed an offshoot of OHM in 2009, named OHMphrey, joining forces with Jake Cinniger, Joel Cummins, and Kris Meyers. This new venture brought an innovative twist to their established musical style, blending their unique heavy jazz/rock/fusion sound with an infusion of progressive rock.

Chris Poland’s career stands as a testament to his profound love for music and his ceaseless desire for innovation and growth. From his early days with Megadeth to his co-creation of OHM and OHMphrey, Poland’s journey showcases a man in constant pursuit of new sounds, techniques, and musical horizons. His contributions to heavy metal, jazz fusion, and rock have left an indelible mark on the music world, earning him a place amongst the greats.
