The Fools are a rock band from Massachusetts that have been entertaining audiences with their humorous and catchy songs since the late 1970s. They started out as The Rhythm A’s, a group that included future members of the Nervous Eaters, but changed their name after adding singer Mike Girard and guitarist Rich Bartlett. Their motto was “Too lazy for work, too dumb for school, let’s start a band.”
They gained popularity with their parody of Talking Heads’ “Psycho Killer”, which they rewrote as “Psycho Chicken” and recorded in a basement. The song became a hit on Boston radio stations and caught the attention of EMI Records, who signed the band and sent them on tour with The Knack. Their next single, “It’s a Night for Beautiful Girls”, reached #67 on the Billboard charts and was followed by their debut album, Sold Out, in 1980.
The Fools continued to make music that blended rock and comedy, releasing their second album Heavy Mental in 1981, which featured a cover of Roy Orbison’s “Running Scared” that peaked at #50 on the Billboard Hot 100. They also opened for Van Halen on their Fair Warning tour that year. However, after two members left the band and EMI dropped them, they signed with PVC Records and released their third album World Dance Party in 1985. The album spawned four regional hits, including “Life Sucks…Then You Die” and a remake of Manfred Mann’s “Doo Wah Diddy”, which got heavy airplay on MTV.
The Fools have remained active over the years, releasing several more albums on their own label Ouch Records, such as Rated XXX, Show ‘Em You’re Nuts, and Christmas Toons. They have also performed live regularly, often incorporating country/western songs under the name Mel Smith and His Wild In-Laws. In 2010, Girard published a book called Psycho Chicken & Other Foolish Tales, which chronicled the history of the band. In 2011, their hometown of Ipswich declared April 1st as ‘The Fools Day’ to honor them.
