NorthEast Collectibles Extravaganza: 40 Years of Pop Culture and Nostalgia!

NorthEast Collectibles Extravaganza: 40 Years of Pop Culture and Nostalgia!

Boston MA – 2025

The NorthEast Collectibles Extravaganza (NECX) proudly announces its milestone 40th anniversary celebration, marking four decades of bringing collectors, enthusiasts, and pop culture fans together.

When Gary Sohmers moved to New England from Madison WI in 1983, he came to play rock ‘n’ roll, and sell collectibles. Opening his first Wex Rex Collectibles store in Hudson MA in 1984, he started attending local flea markets, record, and comic collector shows, including Jolly Jim’s Flea Market at the NorthEast Trade Center, in Woburn MA.

NorthEast Collectibles Extravaganza: 40 Years of Pop Culture and Nostalgia!

The NorthEast Collectibles Extravaganza began in 1985 as a section of the flea market that Sohmers created, nurtured, curated, and developed into a comfortable event that vendors and consumers enjoy. This has grown from a modest gathering of collectors to become one of the longest, continuous collector’s events in the northeast U.S.

In 1985, while trying to find a way to get mainstream media to cover – or even care – about Pop Culture, Sohmers decided to bring his first celebrity guest to a Collectibles Extravaganza, and called friends to find a celebrity who might be able to get some PR for the show. As luck would have it, someone gave Gary Sohmers the phone number for Adam West’s representative. When Sohmers called, West himself answered the phone, thus beginning a 35 year friendship between the two.  Adam’s last appearance before he passed away was also at a Collectibles Extravaganza in Hanover, MA in 2017.

In 1986, the event moved with Jolly Jim’s Flea Market to fill the Boston Bayside Expo Center for approximately 10 years of shows. These included the Lost in Space cast reunions in both 1990 and 1995, the Munsters cast reunion in 1994, and hundreds of celebrity guests during that time period.

The show moved to the Shriners Auditorium in Wilmington MA for several years, which included the first cast reunion of the cast of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (without Gene Wilder).  In 2010, the Collectibles Extravaganza – now joined by NorthEast ComicCon – returned to the Shriners Auditorium for a few years after a short hiatus.

Having moved the show to Hanover MA in 2017 for a year, the Collectibles Extravaganza landed it’s permanent 21st century venue location, the Boxboro Regency Hotel & Conference Center, in Boxborough MA.  This venue has all the needs of a fun event, including 50,000 square feet of space for vendors and fun, hotel rooms, a restaurant and bar, and an amazing staff that cares about the attendees.

“What began as a simple aggregation of various collectible categories has evolved into a cornerstone event in the collectibles community,” says Gary Sohmers, founder and Director of NECX. “We’re proud to have maintained our commitment to bringing together diverse collecting interests for 40 years.”
