If you are a fan of Japanese pop culture, fantasy, and adventure, you won’t want to miss the special screening of Iké Boys at the NorthEast ComicCon & Collectibles Extravaganza on Friday, November 24th, and Saturday, November 25th, 2023. The film is a 2021 American mixed media fantasy film directed by Eric McEver and starring Quinn Lord, Ronak Gandhi, and Christina Higa as three teenagers who acquire superpowers from a magical anime film. Billy Zane, Yumiko Shaku, and Ben Browder are featured in supporting roles.
The film follows the story of Shawn and Vik, two best friends who escape from the boredom of high school life in Oklahoma through their obsession with all things Japanese. When a mysterious anime film transforms them into its superhuman characters, they at first think that their wildest fantasies have come true. But when ancient monsters threaten to unleash the apocalypse on New Year’s Eve of 1999, Shawn and Vik must look to each other to become the heroes they were always meant to be. Joining their adventure is Miki, a Japanese exchange student whose determination to go on a Native American vision quest puts her on a collision course with both Shawn and Vik and their foes… and whose destiny may determine the fate of the world.
Iké Boys is a heartwarming and often hilarious film that pays homage to the Japanese genre films of the 1980s and 1990s, such as Godzilla, Ultraman, and Akira. The film combines live-action, 2D animation, and tokusatsu-style effects to create a unique and immersive experience. The film premiered at the Fantastic Fest on September 26, 2021, and received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. It has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 11 reviews.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with the director, Eric McEver, who will be joined by poster artist Bob Eggleton. Eric McEver is a filmmaker who grew up in Oklahoma making animated short films, and relocated to Tokyo during college to pursue his passion for Japanese fantasy cinema. He has worked as a theater actor, translator, game developer, and animation producer, and has developed an offbeat cinematic vision fusing the languages and idiosyncrasies of his two homes. He is also the writer and director of Paleonaut, a 2017 short film about a time travel romance inspired by his lifelong affinity for paleontology. Paleonaut screened at over 50 festivals worldwide and received nearly 20 awards, including the Wasserman Award in Directing and the Best Science Fiction Award at the Oscar-qualifying HollyShorts Film Festival.
