Canadian actor and comedian Kevin McDonald is best known for being a member of the sketch comedy troupe The Kids in the Hall. Born in Montreal, Quebec, Kevin moved to LA California at seven years old. He later moved back to Toronto where he met his comedy partner Dave Foley at an improv class, later forming a duo called The Kids in the Hall, which included Bruce McCulloch, Mark McKinney and Scott Thompson.
The Kids in the Hall had their own TV show on CBC in Canada and HBO and CBS in the United States from 1988 to 1995. The show featured both surreal and satirical sketches, involving cross-dressing, absurd characters and recurring catchphrases. A few of Kevin McDonald’s most memorable characters include the Head Crusher, Sir Simon Milligan, the King of Empty Promises and Buddy Cole. In addition to being nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards, their show Kids in the Hall won two Gemini Awards.
Once Kids in the Hall ended, Kevin McDonald continued to work as an actor and writer in different TV and film projects. He starred in (and co-wrote) the Kids in the Hall movie “Brain Candy” in 1996. He also appeared in movies such as Galaxy Quest, Sky High, Lilo & Stitch and The Godson. He has done voice work for animated shows Invader Zim, Catscratch and Phineas and Ferb. He’s written for and acted in shows such as The Martin Short Show, Carpoolers and Kids in the Hall: Death Comes to Town. In addition to performing stand-up comedy, he’s toured with The Kids in the Hall in several different reunion shows.
Kevin McDonald has been very open about his personal life and his struggles, specifically his relationship with his alcoholic father, who passed in 2004. He has used his father as the inspiration for some of his sketches, including Daddy Drank and Girl Drink Drunk. He also created a one-man show called Hammy and the Kids, which explored his father’s life and death. He has been married and divorced once, with no children.
