What is Kids In The Hall?
Kids In The Hall is a Canadian sketch comedy show that aired for five seasons from 1988 to 1995, and a sixth revival season in 2022, starring the comedy troupe of the same name. The troupe consists of Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney and Scott Thompson, who play a variety of characters, often in drag, in surreal and satirical sketches. The show was produced by Lorne Michaels, the creator of Saturday Night Live, and aired on CBC in Canada and HBO and CBS in the United States.
The show’s name comes from a phrase used by comedian Sid Caesar, who would blame his writers, the “kids in the hall”, for a joke that did not go over well with the audience. The troupe adopted the name after they met at an improv class in Toronto and formed a duo, which later expanded to a quintet. They performed live shows in various venues before getting their own TV special in 1988, which led to the series. The show’s style was influenced by Monty Python, SCTV and The Young Ones, among others.
The show featured a wide range of recurring characters and catchphrases, such as the Head Crusher, a man who pretends to crush people’s heads with his fingers; Buddy Cole, a flamboyant gay bar owner who delivers monologues; Cabbage Head, a misogynist who wears a cabbage as a hat; the Chicken Lady, a half-human, half-chicken creature who is obsessed with sex; and “I’m crushing your head!”, “These are the Daves I know, I know”, “Girl drink drunk” and “I’m a bad doctor”. The show also parodied various genres and topics, such as horror, sci-fi, religion, politics, music and sexuality.
The show was critically acclaimed and gained a cult following, especially among alternative comedy fans. It was nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards and won two Gemini Awards. It also spawned a feature film, Kids In The Hall: Brain Candy, in 1996, and a miniseries, Kids In The Hall: Death Comes To Town, in 2010. The troupe has reunited several times for live tours and comedy festivals. In 2022, they released an eight-episode revival season on Amazon Prime Video, featuring new sketches and characters, as well as some of their classic ones.
