Will Murray, the prolific American writer known for his contributions to various genres, will be featured at the 2024 Cabin Fever edition of NEComicCon!
Growing up in Boston, Massachusetts, his fascination with pulp fiction led him to collect pulp magazines, and he even wrote psychological profiles of the iconic character Doc Savage. Will Murray’s passion for the genre eventually led him to join the pulp-reprint publisher Odyssey Publications. He also co-authored a study on The Shadow Magazine. Interestingly, his journey into writing began when he discovered an outline for an unwritten Doc Savage adventure and decided to take a shot at completing it. This led to his ghostwriting the popular Destroyer series, starting with the book Encounter Group in 1984.
Will Murray’s deep admiration for Doc Savage extended beyond simple research. He became the literary executor for the estate of Lester Dent, the original creator of Doc Savage. Under Dent’s pseudonym, Kenneth Robeson, Murray penned twenty-one new Doc Savage novels based on Dent’s outlines. His 2013 novel, Doc Savage: Skull Island, even teamed up the iconic hero with King Kong in a wild adventure.
Murray’s versatility shines through his diverse body of work. He has written Cthulhu Mythos stories, explored the world of Mars Attacks, and contributed to The Executioner series. His retro-pulp collection, Spicy Zeppelin Stories, showcases his talent under various pen names. Notably, he co-created the superhero Squirrel Girl alongside artist Steve Ditko.
Beyond his contributions to established series, Will Murray continues to write for other pulp characters. His love for the genre remains unwavering, making him a respected figure in the world of adventure fiction. Whether it’s battling supervillains or exploring mysterious islands, Will Murray’s storytelling keeps readers engaged and entertained.
