Gina Schock is the drummer and one of the songwriters of The Go-Go’s, the most successful all-female group in the history of rock music, with hit songs like “Our Lips Are Sealed”, “We Got The Beat”, and “Vacation”. She has also worked with other artists, such as Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, and Belinda Carlisle.
Gina started playing drums at the age of 13, and soon joined local bands and performed in clubs. She moved to Los Angeles in 1979, and auditioned for The Go-Go’s, who were looking for a new drummer. She impressed them with her skills and personality, and became a permanent member of the group. She also contributed to the songwriting, co-writing some of the band’s most popular songs, such as “Head Over Heels”, “Turn to You”, and “Yes or No”.
The Go-Go’s rose to fame in the early 1980s, with their debut album Beauty and the Beat becoming the first and only album by an all-female band to top the Billboard charts. They sold over 10 million records worldwide, and won numerous awards and accolades. They also broke barriers and stereotypes, proving that women could rock as hard as men, and inspiring countless female musicians. They disbanded in 1985, but reunited several times for tours and albums. In 2021, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a well-deserved recognition for their legacy and influence.
Gina Schock has also pursued other projects outside of The Go-Go’s. She formed her own band, House of Schock, in 1987, and released one album. She also collaborated with other artists, such as a-ha, Carlene Carter, and John Mellencamp. She co-wrote the title track of Miley Cyrus’ 2008 album, Breakout, and a song for Selena Gomez’s 2009 album, Kiss & Tell. She also appeared in some films and TV shows, such as Bull Durham, The Accused, Superstar, and That ’70s Show.
Gina is not only a talented musician, but also a passionate photographer. She has taken thousands of photos of The Go-Go’s and their adventures, capturing their candid moments and behind-the-scenes stories. She published a book in 2021, titled Made in Hollywood: All Access With the Go-Go’s, which features her photos and writings, as well as contributions from Jodie Foster, Paul Reubens, Martha Quinn, Kate Pierson, Dave Stewart, and members of the band.
Gina Schock is a legend of rock and roll, and a role model for many. She has shown her dedication, creativity, and charisma in everything she does. She has also shared her joy and enthusiasm with her fans and friends.
