Philo comes from a family of artists: his father, Dale Barnhart, was an animator for Disney and Hanna-Barbera. Philo started his career as an assistant animator for Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979, before joining Disney, where he worked on several feature films. He also worked on the video games Dragon’s Lair and Space Ace, which were groundbreaking for their use of laser disc technology and interactive animation.
Philo Barnhart left Disney in 1991 and joined Don Bluth Entertainment, where he worked on films like Thumbelina (1994), A Troll in Central Park (1994), and Anastasia (1997). He also worked with other studios, including Film Roman and Warner Bros. He has been involved in various projects, such as An American Tail, The Smurfs, Scooby Doo, and Godzilla, and has done character design, layout, and storyboarding for many different productions.
Philo is not only an animator, but also an actor. He appeared as a boy with a kite in Mary Poppins in 1964, and as a voice actor in The Secret of NIMH in 1982. He has done some live-action roles as a lawyer in Charlie’s Death Wish in 2005, and a wino in Psychon Invaders in 2006.
Philo Barnhart is a talented and versatile artist who has left his mark on the animation industry.
