“Cowboy Mach, Joe Pet and Danny Hargrove. Without a doubt the wildest and most fun bunch of guys I ever played with. It was rocking as close to the edge as I will ever get. Truly a band of pirates.” – Joe Perry
Mach Bell made his bones fronting the hard-rock, proto-punk group Thundertrain. Appearing in 1977 on both the “Live at the Rat” album and the Thundertrain debut lp. Best known for their 1976 single “Hot For Teacher,” Thundertrain were regular headliners at Max’s Kansas City, The Club in Cambridge, CBGB’s, Paradise Theater, Cleveland Agora, and of course the Rat in Kenmore Square.
In 1982 Aerosmith lead guitarist-in-exile Joe Perry needed a new lead singer for his Joe Perry Project. Mach Bell (who Joe always calls “Cowboy”) was selected for the job. Cowboy and Perry toured far & wide in the early 80’s. They co-wrote seven of the original songs on the 1983 Joe Perry Project album Once a Rocker Always a Rocker (MCA/Geffen).
In 2019 Mach released his first book, “Once a Rocker Always a Rocker: A Diary” the long talked-about road diaries that were meticulously kept by Cowboy during his years as a member of the Joe Perry Project. Mach’s newest book “I Gotta Rock” (2021) is his rock’n’roll memoir, full of Bell’s on-the-road experiences in bands (and with Circus Vargas!) during 1965 – 1985.

In 2002, Gulcher Records of Bloomington, IN, re-released Thundertrain’s remastered Teenage Suicide LP, originally recorded in 1976. Pure & Easy Records founder John Visnaskas restored the work from the original tapes. Several bonus cuts are featured on the album. Thundertrain was Mach’s launch pad, and he calls it “a great rocket ride. 1977 was probably our craziest year; we got tons of airplay, press, and found ourselves gigging with the Runaways, the Dictators, Thin Lizzy, and of course all the great Rat bands: Willie Alexander, DMZ, the Cars, Reddy Teddy, and so many more.
